Hunting Location Accomodation Price & booking Technical review

Vassbygda in short

  • Our best forest grouse terrain at 55,000 decares
  • Our most comfortable cabin
  • Easy access – great nature experiences

Hunting

A roughly 55,000-decare large and varied hunting area is offered with the cabin at Kalbekkvika as the base, located in the heart of the natural gem Vassbygda in Sør-Helgeland. There is also good fishing available to guests. Net fishing is permitted at specific locations and times by agreement. There are other buildings in the area, but the outlying land is untouched. Forest roads and a boat make it easy to access large parts of the terrain. A boat is included in the rental. Hunting is exclusive to the guests renting the area.

The hunting grounds stretch from about 30 to 600 meters above sea level. The cabin sits around 20 meters above sea level. There is road access all the way to the cabin. Distances: Bus (Sørnskog) 3 km, post office and store (Hommelstø) 23 km, Brønnøysund Airport approx. 60 km.

The offer is weekly. Normally, only 2 weeks of hunting are rented out per year. The price applies for up to 4 hunters with 2 dogs. The cabin has a beautiful view and sits 20 meters from Storvatnet in Kalbekkvika. It is well equipped and accommodates 4–6 people. It has electricity and indoor water. An annex can be used as a sauna and drying room.

Willlow ptarmigan

The terrain includes about 20,000 decares of willow ptarmigan habitat. The population has been decent in recent years, but it varies quite a bit from year to year. We primarily recommend this area for hunters who are also interested in hunting forest grouse.

Forest grouse
ChatGPT sa:

There are roughly 35,000 decares of forest grouse terrain, of which about 30,000 are accessible on foot from the cabin or from the forest roads in the area. The remaining terrain is accessible by boat along Storvatnet, Fjellvatnet, and Strauman. The population has been decent in recent years. The terrain is suitable for 3 dogs. Kalbekkvika is considered our best area for forest grouse, with a wide variety of forest grouse habitats.

Rock ptarmigan

There are also several usable areas for rock ptarmigan hunting. You should expect about 45 minutes of climbing to reach the rock ptarmigan grounds. Some hare are also taken in the area. If you encounter hare, fox, marten, raven, or crow, hunting these species is permitted as well. Hunting up to 2 roe deer bucks can be arranged as part of the rental agreement upon request.

There are many good fishing lakes in the area, and we recommend bringing a fishing rod. Sea trout and salmon fishing is permitted until September 15 and is included in the rental.

Service

The cabin will be clean and warm when you arrive; please leave it in the same condition when you depart. The rental also includes access to a three-lavvu shelter at Søbergsvatnet, located in the middle of the willow ptarmigan terrain. If desired, meal service, daily cleaning of common areas, and similar services can be arranged for an additional fee. Guiding and a wide range of other services can also be arranged at fixed prices. There are, for example, several limestone caves in the area. A motorboat is available for use on Storvatnet/Fjellvatnet, and rowboats are available on Strauman and Søbergsvatnet.

Location

The Eide watercourse was historically an important travel route to the fjord and onward to the trading post, and its fish resources were an essential source of food. Today, the watercourse holds one of the strongest sea trout populations in the region, along with some salmon, as well as healthy stocks of trout and Arctic char. Good catches are taken here every year, both in the river and in the lakes.

The watercourse begins in Brønnøy municipality, with most of it lying in Bindal municipality, and has a catchment area of about 100 km². It has not been affected by hydropower development. During the fishing season, the “normal” water flow is around 4 m³ at the outlet of Fjellvatnet at Øvereidet. The system responds quickly to rainfall, and water levels fluctuate through the season depending on precipitation. The watercourse is managed according to a fisheries plan that ensures good reproduction and sustainable harvesting.

Kalbekkvika is located in scenic surroundings in the middle of Vassbygda, at the upper end of the Eide watercourse. Vassbygda is characterized by large forest areas, limestone mountains with several caves, wetlands, and the lakes, rivers, and waterfalls of the watercourse. The cabin sits close to Storvatnet and accommodates up to 8 people. There is road access all the way to the cabin door. Kalbekkvika offers some of the most varied fishing in the area, for sea trout and salmon as well as trout and Arctic char. Guests here share the fishing rights with the guests staying at Sørengvatnet.

Most of the spawning areas in the watercourse are located in Fjellvatnet and Storvatnet, which means that almost all fish must pass Øvereidet. The fishing here is normally good throughout the season. The average size of sea trout is about 1 kg. For salmon, the typical size is about 2 kg. The largest fish each season are usually 5–6 kg. Around 80% of the catch consists of sea trout.

Electricity/water/gas

This section is for the technically interested, or in case you should unexpectedly experience technical problems during your stay.

There is no mobile coverage at the cabin, but there is patchy coverage on Urvoldvatnet and in parts of the mountain.

Power system:

2400W solar panel with a 9 kWh lithium battery and a 230V inverter. Tec29 power generator that can be started if needed. Electricity is used to run the water system, lighting, and the refrigerator.

If you experience problems:

  1. Check if the circuit breakers have been turned off and whether there is light inside the electrical cabinet
  2. Check that the main power switch in the kitchen has not been turned off
  3. If you are without power: Fill gasoline in the generator in the woodshed and start it manually. Let it run for about 6 hours.

Water system:

The entire system is automatic and consists of a 230V pressure pump down by the river and a propane water heater that heats water when hot water is drawn.

If you experience problems:

  1. Check that the 230V inverter is turned on and supplying power (green light)
  2. Check that the water pump is turned on
  3. If water is flowing but not getting hot:
    1. Check if there is gas
    2. Press the thermal fuse on top of the heater

Propane:

Propane is used for heating water as well as for cooking.

    • By the propane bottles there is a bottle selector:
      Green: Do nothing.
Red: Replace the bottle that is empty and turn the arrow toward the bottle with the least amount left. Do not replace bottles that are not empty.
  • Changing propane bottles:
Turn off the gas using the switch on the valve. The valve is loosened by lifting the black ring.
Mount the new bottle by squeezing the black ring upward, pressing the regulator down onto the new bottle, and then pressing the black ring down to lock it.
When the bottle is correctly mounted, it should be possible to lift the bottle by the regulator.
Extra gas bottles are stored in the outbuilding.
Bring empty gas bottles back across Åbjørvatnet and place them in the boathouse by the car.
