Hunting

A hunting area of about 35,000 decares, which also offers good inland fishing, is available with Urvoldhytta as the main base and an additional cabin within the terrain. The area is varied and has a distinctive natural character. The cabin stands on the old foundations of the former Urvold farm. There is no longer any permanent settlement in the area, and no other cabins within the hunting grounds besides these two. There is a private forest road all the way to Urvoldhytta, and the fishing in the area is excellent. There is a power line in the area, but aside from that, the nature is untouched. The price includes hunting for up to 4 hunters with two dogs, or 6 hunters without dogs. The hunting is exclusive.

The hunting terrain ranges from 100 to 1000 meters above sea level. Urvoldhytta is located at about 100 meters. There is a private forest road leading all the way to the cabin, which is 27 km from Terråk and the nearest COOP store, 154 km from Namsos Airport, and 140 km from Brønnøysund Airport.

The offer is weekly. Normally, only two weeks of hunting are rented out per year. The price applies for up to 4 hunters with 2 dogs. Urvoldhytta is of high standard and has 4–6 beds. You can drive right up to the cabin door. In addition, there is another small and simple cabin, Reppahytta, which can be used freely by prior arrangement. It is located in the inner part of the terrain, at about 170 meters above sea level, and is a good starting point for forest grouse and ptarmigan hunting in the northern part of the area.

Willow ptarmigan

The willow ptarmigan population has been decent in recent years, but nowhere near what it was 20 years ago. The hunting area has a total of about 11,000 decares of ptarmigan terrain. Parts of the terrain are easily accessible and well suited for hunting with dogs. Other parts are more rugged with steeper access. With access to the Glømmen area, the ptarmigan habitat expands considerably, but the birds’ location varies from year to year.

There are mainly two ascents into the hunting area, and it is important not to overhunt the nearby sections. To make use of the inner areas, we recommend an overnight stay at Reppahytta. The terrain is suitable for 2–3 dogs.

Forest grouse

In addition, there are about 7,000 decares of mixed terrain for forest grouse and ptarmigan. The population has been decent in recent years. It varies somewhat from year to year, but the area is considered, together with Kalbekkvika, to be one of our better forest grouse areas. The forest terrain is relatively rugged and challenging to walk, but generally has a good black grouse population.

Rock ptarmigan
ChatGPT sa:

There are also good areas for rock ptarmigan hunting. The population has been strong in recent years. The terrain is relatively easy to walk, but you should expect at least about 40 minutes of climbing to reach the rock ptarmigan grounds. The terrain is suitable for a total of 6 hunters if the rock ptarmigan areas are also utilized and if hunting is done without dogs.

Other information

Some hare are also taken in the area. If you encounter hare, fox, marten, raven, or crow, hunting these is also permitted. It is possible to arrange a roe deer harvest permit during the hunt; the animals are generally large with fine antlers. There are good fishing lakes in the area.

Location

One of the fascinating things about Bindal is how diverse the landscape is. Just a few kilometers from the lush, open scenery of Åbygda—and equally close to Tosenfjorden—you find yourself in Urvold. Here you enter an entirely different world, and it’s hard to imagine how people once managed to make a living in such a small and remote place. The mountains rise almost menacingly around you on all sides, and it takes a moment to understand where the river has found its way out again. Grand, varied, and beautiful—this is a perfect starting point for mountain hikes and exciting hunting and fishing for those who enjoy surroundings that are not manicured or without challenges. The farm was abandoned long ago, and the old house was in too poor a condition to restore. Instead, a modern cabin was built on the old foundations.

In earlier times, only footpaths connected Urvold with the outside world. Now you can drive all the way in on a forest road that ends just past the cabin. It is several kilometers to the nearest neighbor.

The Urvold watercourse is about 14 km long, starting between the Glømmen and Granbostad mountains in Bindal and ending in Tosenfjorden. The lowest 3 km are salmon-bearing, with a rich population of sea trout and a good number of small salmon. This is also one of the southernmost watercourses in the country with a strong population of Arctic char.

The salmon-bearing section consists of the Urvold River, which flows into Urvoldvatnet, Urvoldvatnet itself (about 2 km long), and the 300-meter river that flows out into Tosenfjorden at Ureidet.

The Urvold River runs right past the cabin and carries salmon up to about 500 meters above it. The upper stretch of the river is swift, but offers some excellent spots for fly fishing. After about 500 meters, the river calms, forming a long pool of about 200 meters with very clear water. During the October spawning season, we have recorded nearly 1,000 spawning fish in this section. After that, the river becomes swifter again before flowing into Urvoldvatnet.

Fishing spots

Norgeskart gives you good maps and aerial photos. It is possible to download the Norgeskart app so you have offline maps during your stay.

If you open Google Earth with this link, you’ll get a map with lots of information, including mountain trails. Use the mouse together with the CTRL or ALT key to navigate the map. Select “your cabin” in the content menu to get a 3D view of the area.

Electricity/water/gas

This section is for the technically interested, or in case you should unexpectedly experience technical problems during your stay.

There is no mobile coverage at the cabin, but there is patchy coverage on Urvoldvatnet and in parts of the mountain.

Power system:

2400W solar panel with a 9 kWh lithium battery and a 230V inverter. Tec29 power generator that can be started if needed. Electricity is used to run the water system, lighting, and the refrigerator.

If you experience problems:

  1. Check if the circuit breakers have been turned off and whether there is light inside the electrical cabinet
  2. Check that the main power switch in the kitchen has not been turned off
  3. If you are without power: Fill gasoline in the generator in the woodshed and start it manually. Let it run for about 6 hours.

Water system:

The entire system is automatic and consists of a 230V pressure pump down by the river and a propane water heater that heats water when hot water is drawn.

If you experience problems:

  1. Check that the 230V inverter is turned on and supplying power (green light)
  2. Check that the water pump is turned on
  3. If water is flowing but not getting hot:
    1. Check if there is gas
    2. Press the thermal fuse on top of the heater

Propane:

Propane is used for heating water as well as for cooking.

    • By the propane bottles there is a bottle selector:
      Green: Do nothing.
Red: Replace the bottle that is empty and turn the arrow toward the bottle with the least amount left. Do not replace bottles that are not empty.
  • Changing propane bottles:
Turn off the gas using the switch on the valve. The valve is loosened by lifting the black ring.
Mount the new bottle by squeezing the black ring upward, pressing the regulator down onto the new bottle, and then pressing the black ring down to lock it.
When the bottle is correctly mounted, it should be possible to lift the bottle by the regulator.
Extra gas bottles are stored in the outbuilding.
Bring empty gas bottles back across Åbjørvatnet and place them in the boathouse by the car.
