Hunting

ChatGPT sa:

An approximately 95,000-decare large and varied hunting area, with excellent inland fishing in the upper part of the Åbjør watercourse, is offered with the accommodation at Kalvvatn as the base. The area includes the innermost part of the Åbjør watercourse’s catchment area in southern Nordland. This region is a vast, varied, and truly unique wilderness. The watercourse is regulated, but there are few visible interventions apart from the regulated Kalvvatnet and a power line — and the fishing is excellent.

There is no permanent settlement in the Kalvvatn area, and there are no inhabited cabins within the hunting grounds. If the entire terrain is utilized, hunting can be carried out with 5 rifles. The hunting is exclusive to guests renting the territory.

The hunting area ranges from about 350 to 1000 meters above sea level. The cabin is located at about 500 meters. Nearest general store: approximately 35 km (Namsskogan).

The offer is weekly. Normally, only 2 weeks of hunting are rented out per year.

Willow ptarmigan
ChatGPT sa:

In total, there are about 7,000 decares of willow ptarmigan terrain with good quality for hunting with dogs. The rest is largely rock ptarmigan terrain. Willow ptarmigan hunting is suitable for 2 dogs and 2–4 hunters.

Rock ptarmigan

The population has been consistently good in recent years. In total, there are about 50,000 decares of rock ptarmigan terrain. By using the boat on Kalvvatnet, large parts of the area can be reached easily. There are no forest grouse in the terrain. Altogether, there are about 10,000 decares of small and large lakes within the hunting area (see map).

Other information

The area is rich in inland trout, and the fish have good size and quality. The lakes offer good fishing, and the river and its tributaries—such as in Brennelvdalen—provide excellent rod fishing. Allowed gear: worm, spinner, lure, fly.

During the ptarmigan hunt, net fishing with up to 4 nets is permitted in Kalvvatnet for food during the stay. Nets must be brought along. Nets that have been used in other watercourses less than 7 days before use in Kalvvatnet must be disinfected beforehand (this must be arranged with us in advance).

Location

The Kalvvatn area is a special region with a landscape entirely its own. Guests there have access to about 150,000 decares, mostly without encountering other people. No fishing or hunting permits are sold in the area, though the reindeer herding community may fish to obtain food while in the mountains.

The area lies at around 500 meters above sea level. When the Åbjør watercourse was developed in the 1970s, Nord-Trøndelag Electric Company had to build a 24 km construction road from the E6 highway to Upper Kalvvatn, where the dam and intake were to be located. The construction road is gated and, on our property, may only be used by the reindeer herding community, Åbjørakraft, and our guests.

The Kalvvatn area consists of the innermost part of the Åbjør watercourse. The Sámi have reindeer grazing here, and Nord-Trøndelag Electric Company may access the area for power facility maintenance. Aside from this, very few people travel here. It is an exceptionally beautiful area with diverse hiking terrain, excellent inland fishing, and good small-game hunting.

Electricity/water/gas

This section is for the technically interested, or in case you should unexpectedly experience technical problems during your stay.

There is no mobile coverage at the cabin, but there is patchy coverage on Urvoldvatnet and in parts of the mountain.

Power system:

2400W solar panel with a 9 kWh lithium battery and a 230V inverter. Tec29 power generator that can be started if needed. Electricity is used to run the water system, lighting, and the refrigerator.

If you experience problems:

  1. Check if the circuit breakers have been turned off and whether there is light inside the electrical cabinet
  2. Check that the main power switch in the kitchen has not been turned off
  3. If you are without power: Fill gasoline in the generator in the woodshed and start it manually. Let it run for about 6 hours.

Water system:

The entire system is automatic and consists of a 230V pressure pump down by the river and a propane water heater that heats water when hot water is drawn.

If you experience problems:

  1. Check that the 230V inverter is turned on and supplying power (green light)
  2. Check that the water pump is turned on
  3. If water is flowing but not getting hot:
    1. Check if there is gas
    2. Press the thermal fuse on top of the heater

Propane:

Propane is used for heating water as well as for cooking.

    • By the propane bottles there is a bottle selector:
      Green: Do nothing.
Red: Replace the bottle that is empty and turn the arrow toward the bottle with the least amount left. Do not replace bottles that are not empty.
  • Changing propane bottles:
Turn off the gas using the switch on the valve. The valve is loosened by lifting the black ring.
Mount the new bottle by squeezing the black ring upward, pressing the regulator down onto the new bottle, and then pressing the black ring down to lock it.
When the bottle is correctly mounted, it should be possible to lift the bottle by the regulator.
Extra gas bottles are stored in the outbuilding.
Bring empty gas bottles back across Åbjørvatnet and place them in the boathouse by the car.
