Hunting

A roughly 50,000-decare large, varied, continuous hunting area with good inland fishing is offered with Åbjørstua as the base. There is no longer any permanent settlement in the Åbjøra area, and there are no inhabited cabins within the hunting terrain. The hunting area ranges from 100–1000 meters above sea level. The cabin sits at 100 meters. Distances from Åbjørvatnet: Terråk and the COOP market: 30 km, Namsos Airport: 154 km, Brønnøysund: 140 km.

The rental is weekly. Normally, only two weeks of hunting are rented out per year. The price applies for up to six hunters with three dogs.

Åbjørstua is located at the inner end of Åbjørvatnet. The cabin sits in an old cultural landscape, centrally within the Åbjøra area. Åbjørstua is well equipped and has space for up to 8 people. Gamlestua is located about 100 meters away and is used during the ptarmigan hunt for access to the Åbjøra South hunting area. Access is by car to Åbjørvatnet, then by boat 4 km across the lake and up the river to the cabin. From the boat landing it is about 300 meters to the cabin.

Willow ptarmigan

The hunting area has about 15,000 decares of willow ptarmigan terrain. The population has been decent in recent years, with a small increase in 2019–2020. From the main valley, the slopes rise fairly steeply toward the mountain. In some side valleys and in the upper parts of the hillsides, you’ll find suitable areas for ptarmigan hunting with dogs. Parts of the dog-hunting terrain are rugged and steep. The ptarmigan hunting is suitable for 2–3 dogs.

Forest grouse

There is also about 1,000 decares of mixed terrain for forest grouse and ptarmigan. The forest grouse population varies greatly from year to year depending on food availability in Åbjørdalen, but it is usually decent.

Rock ptarmigan

There are large and good areas for rock ptarmigan hunting, and the population has remained consistently strong in recent years. It takes about a 50-minute walk from the cabin to reach the rock ptarmigan terrain.

Other information

In Åbjørvatnet, fishing is primarily done with nets. Trout weighing over 4 kg have been caught there. During winter, Åbjørvatnet offers good ice fishing. Fishing rights are included in a hunting lease, but they do NOT include fishing in Åbjøra (the river). The fishing rights apply from the threshold at the outlet of Åbjørvatnet. You can also read our page describing inland fishing in the area. Due to the risk of spreading disease, bringing your own nets is not allowed, but nets are provided upon arrival. There is no mobile phone coverage at the cabin.

Location

Ancient finds and burial mounds show that there has been a settlement here ever since the vikings. Perhaps it was the outlaws who first sought refuge in this remote valley? Then they found that the natural resources were large with forests and game, with large areas suitable for grain cultivation, pastures and good fishing waters. But only in the year 1611, do we find the first user we know by name. Afterwards, people liver permanently on the farm until 1954. The old farmhouse still stands, but our guests live in a modern cottage in the same infield.

Important information about Åbjørstua

Arrival and Directions

Unless otherwise agreed: Come to our office at Sørfjordveien 10, 7980 Terråk. Once you have received the key, you can continue driving to Åbjørvatnet.

Take the boat across the lake and up the river to reach the cabin. There are some shallow spots, so we strongly recommend opening this map in the Google Maps app. If you download it offline, you will have detailed maps for the boat trip and several mountain trails available during your stay. Google’s base map is quite poor, so we also recommend downloading offline maps from Norgeskart. The app is the best option.

Be VERY careful as you approach the river mouth and in the first bend. It is shallow and easy to damage the propeller. Dock about 300 meters after the second bend and use the cart to help carry your luggage up to the cabin.

Distances: Rørvik Airport: 110 km, Brønnøysund Airport: 130 km, Værnes Airport: 300 km. The nearest grocery store is in Terråk, about 30 km from the parking area.

Not included in the price: Bed linens, cleaning upon departure

Fishing spots etc

Norgeskart gives you good maps and aerial photos. It is possible to download the Norgeskart app so you have offline maps during your stay.

If you open Google Earth with this link, you’ll get a map with a lot of information, including mountain trails. Use the mouse together with the CTRL or ALT key to navigate the map. Select “your cabin” in the content menu to get a 3D view of the area.

Electricity/water/gas

This section is for the technically interested, or in case you should unexpectedly experience technical problems during your stay.

There is no mobile coverage at the cabin, but there is coverage in certain places up in the mountains.
Telenor coverage: about a 10-minute drive from the parking area.
Netcom coverage: about a 30-minute drive from the parking area.

Power system:

1400W solar panel with a 9 kWh lithium battery and a 230V inverter. Honda EU70 generator that starts automatically when needed. Electricity is used to run the water system, lights, and refrigerator. If you experience problems:

Check whether the circuit breakers or the battery have been turned off
Check whether the battery has power. The blue inverter should show a green light
If you are without power: Fill gasoline in the generator in the woodshed and start it manually. Let it run for about 6 hours.

Water system:

The entire system is automatic and consists of a 230V pressure pump down by the river and a propane water heater that heats the water when hot water is drawn.

If you experience problems:

  • Check that the 230V inverter is turned on and supplying power (green light)
  • Check that the water pump is turned on
  • If water is running but not getting hot:
  • Check whether there is gas
  • Press the thermal fuse on top of the water heater

Propane:

Propane is used for heating water as well as for cooking.

By the propane bottles there is a bottle selector.

  • Green: Do nothing.
  • Red: Replace the bottle that is empty and turn the arrow toward the bottle with the least amount left. Do not replace bottles that are not empty.

Changing propane bottles:
Turn off the gas using the switch on the valve. Loosen the valve by lifting the black ring. Mount the new bottle by squeezing the black ring upward, pressing the regulator down onto the new bottle, and then pressing the black ring down to lock it. When the bottle is correctly mounted, it should be possible to lift the bottle by the regulator. Extra gas bottles are stored in the outbuilding. Bring empty gas bottles back across Åbjørvatnet and place them in the boathouse by the car.
