Fishing

Øvereidet

The river is short and swift, but has a couple of good spots for fishing with angler worm.

The river is about 150 meters long, and is quite swift. The fishing in the river itself is more sensitive to the water flow compared to Sagmestereidet. At high or very low water flows, the fish mainly stands at the inlet/outlet of the river. The fishing in the two lakes is normally good throughout the season. In the main part of the river, you would normally choose to fish with angler worm. In the outlet, fly fishing and fishing with spoon/spinning bait is used. Our guests have exclusive rights for fishing on the riverbank closest to the lodge.

Lake Eidevatn

The river flows into the Eide lake. The fishing is normally good throughout the year. The few people that live in the area have fishing rights in this lake (maximum two boats). If this is your first time in this lake, we recommend a chat with one of the locals for tips on fishing techniques.

Lake Fjellvatnet, Storvatnet and other lakes

In Fjellvatnet and Storvatnet, the fishing is equally good, but the best season is from mid/end July.

The length of the water system (with sea trout and salmon) you can reach from this cabin is about 13 km. long. In the lower part you will mainly fish for sea trout and wild salmon. In the upper part (storvatnet/Fjellvatnet) there is also stationary trout. There is also arctic char in the main water system and in some of the smaller lakes

Guests at Øvereidet can also fish for trout and arctic char in mountain- or forest lakes. For more information browse through the album in this tab.

Guests at Øvereidet have the exclusive right to fish along both sides of the Øvereidet river.

Location

Øvereidet is unlike any other place we know of. A narrow passage between two lakes with large giant’s kettles and deep furrows on the mountain sides – Large hallmarks left by the glaciers that covered the land more than 10 000 years ago on their journey to the ocean.

Øvereidet lies about 4 km upstream of Sagmestereidet, where the narrow passage widens to form the Eide lake. Sitting on the poach, you overlook the Eide lake and you are surrounded by one of Norway’s largest protected conifer nature reserve. This area a unique biodiversity of mushrooms, lichen and rare plants.

Even though the cabin lies several miles from its nearest neighbour, it is easily reached by boat, parking the car at Kalbekkvika. From the boat, you have to walk about 200 meters to get to the cabin. Around the cabin, you are in the middle of Norwegian nature, far from any neighbour and a view unspoiled by electrical lights.

Electricity/Water/Gas

This section is for those interested in technical details or in case you experience technical issues during your stay.

There is limited mobile coverage at the cabin, with only occasional signal in nearby areas.

Power system:
700W solar panel with a 9 kWh lithium battery and 230V inverter.
A Tec29 generator is available to recharge the batteries when needed.
The power system supplies electricity to the water pump, lights, and refrigerator.

If you experience problems:

  • Check that the circuit breakers or the battery are switched on.

  • Check if the battery has power. The blue inverter should display a green light.

  • If there is no power: fill the generator with gasoline (fuel stored in the woodshed) and start it manually. Let it run for about 6 hours. The inverter should display a yellow light during charging.

Water system:
A 3000-liter water tank is located uphill behind the cabin. When the generator is running, both the water tank and the battery bank are refilled/charged. It takes about 30 minutes of generator operation to fill the water tank.

The elevation difference between the tank and the cabin provides water pressure to the tap. A propane water heater warms the water as it flows through.

If you experience problems:

  • Check if there is water in the tank. Run the generator to refill it if necessary.

  • If water flows but doesn’t get warm:

    • Check if there is propane.

    • Press the thermal safety switch on top of the water heater.

Propane:

Propane is used for heating water and for cooking.

Next to the propane bottles, there is a bottle selector:

  • Green: Do nothing.

  • Red: Replace the empty bottle and turn the arrow toward the bottle with the least amount of gas remaining. Do not replace bottles that are not empty.

To replace a propane bottle:

  1. Turn off the gas using the switch on the valve.

  2. Release the valve by lifting the black locking ring.

  3. Attach the new bottle by pulling the black ring upward, pressing the regulator down onto the new bottle, and then pushing the black ring down to lock it in place.

  4. When properly attached, you should be able to lift the bottle by the regulator.

Spare gas bottles are stored in the shed.
Please bring the empty bottles back across Åbjørvatn and place them in the boathouse by the parking area.
