Hunting

An approximately 50,000-decare large and varied hunting area, with excellent inland fishing in the inner part of the Åbjør watercourse, is offered with the accommodation at Kalvkruvatn as the base. The Kalvvatn area lies in the inner section of the Åbjør watercourse in southern Nordland.

This region, and the land further in toward the sources of the Åbjøra River, is a truly unique wilderness. Kalvvatnet is influenced by a hydropower dam, but in the area accessed from Kalvkruhytta, the nature is untouched. There is no permanent settlement at Kalvkru, and there are no inhabited cabins within the hunting grounds. If the entire terrain is utilized, hunting can be carried out with 6 rifles. The hunting is exclusive.

The hunting area ranges from about 250 to 1000 meters above sea level. The cabin is located at around 270 meters. Distance to the nearest store: about 40 km. The offer is weekly. Normally, only 2 weeks of hunting are rented out per year. The price applies for up to 4 hunters with 3 dogs or 6 hunters without dogs.

The cabin is well equipped and suitable for 4–6 people. Access by car: turn off from the E6 about 9.5 km north of Namsskogan, or about 2 km south of Bjørnstad. Follow the construction road (toll road) for 21 km to the parking area. From there, it’s about a 1.7 km walk to Mellomvatnet, where a boat is available. From Mellomvatnet to Kalvkruvatn, it’s about another 1 km to a second boat, which is used to reach the cabin. The trip from the car to the cabin usually takes between 2 and 3 hours including the boat crossings. By clicking on “product description” under the “more info” tab, you will find a detailed map showing this route.

Willow ptarmigan

The willow ptarmigan terrain covers about 15,000 decares. Normally, you will encounter a good population, and the area is one of the most reliable on our properties. The terrain is suitable for 2–4 dogs. Parts of the terrain are rugged and steep.

Rock ptermigan
ChatGPT sa:

There is a good population of rock ptarmigan in the area. Parts of this terrain are easy to walk. You should expect some climbing time to reach the rock ptarmigan grounds.

Forest grouse

The terrain also includes about 5,000 decares of mixed habitat for willow ptarmigan and forest grouse. The forest grouse hunting is of medium quality, and the population varies greatly from year to year.

Other information

The area is rich in inland trout, and the fish are of good size and quality. The lakes offer excellent fishing, and there is fine rod fishing in the river both upstream and downstream from the cabin, with countless good fishing spots. Allowed gear: worm, spinner, lure, fly, nets.
Largest reported fish recently: Kalvkruvatn: 4.1 kg, Mellomvatn: 2.6 kg.

During the ptarmigan hunt, net fishing with up to 3 nets is permitted for food during the stay, in Kalvkruvatn and Mellomvatn. Nets must be brought along. Nets used in other watercourses less than 7 days before use in Kalvkruvatn must be disinfected beforehand. Maximum allowed mesh size: 26 mm.

Location

Of all the places we offer, Kalvkruhytta is the one located deepest in the wilderness—far inside the Åbjør watercourse, by Kalvkruvatnet at 268 meters above sea level. The area is rich in wildlife and fish, with consistently good populations of willow and rock ptarmigan. Moose also inhabit the area, living in the lush and varied mountain forest. Kalvkruvatnet is known for its strong population of excellent trout of good quality and size. Wolverine is common in the region, though few are lucky enough to see one.

The trip down to the cabin leads through beautiful, wild, and untouched nature, and the terrain is relatively easy to walk along a marked trail. It takes a little under three hours from the car to the cabin, including the boat crossings. In winter, propane and heavier supplies for the upcoming season are transported in by snowmobile, and empty containers from the previous season are taken out. The cabin is thoroughly cleaned and inspected before the first guests arrive, but after that, we depend on guests to ensure the place is left in the same good condition.
