NATURE:

The Plahte Estate lies next to the Helgeland coast. This coastline is said to be the most beautiful in the world. The 800 km stretch of Norway has a  57.000.km. coast-line with 12.000 islands.  A large area of this coast has recently been protected as  "world heritage" by UNESCO. (Together with the pyramids.)

Torghatten is one of Norways most famous mountains. A long time ago a giant shot an arrow after another giant because he did not want to give him his daughter. The arrow went through his hat, which fell of into the ocean.  Then the sun came up and everything turned to stone. This mountain is the hat, and the hole is still there. The giants turned into mountains further up the Norwegian coast. Some images from the hole in Torghatten.

There are many other mountains to climb. Heilhornet is the tallest one, and its special shape makes it a landmark for a large area. From the top, you have a very special view over the fjords, the ocean and the inland. The 4-hrs climb is a bit challenging and it is recommended to go with someone who knows the route the first time.

This is a good place for bird watchers. In the area there is Puffin, Kings Eagle, White-tailed eagle, arctic loon, capercailzie and cormorant to mention a few. The estate has one of the densest population of moose in the country, There is also a healthy population of red deer and many other animals. Large areas of the estate has been protected by the government due to its special biology.

There are many natural chalk caves to explore in the area. Some are large caves where you can walk upright, whereas others are for the "definitely non-claustrophobic".

OTHER THINGS TO SEE AND DO:

Namsskogan family park is in our opinion the best zoological garden in Norway. In addition, there are many other attractions for the whole family. What is really nice with this place is that the animals have good space, and that most fences are low so that you can pet the animals (if they feel like it). There are also an OK café in the area. You are also allowed to bring your own food and grill it on the out door BBQs. (1,5-2,5 hrs drive dependent on where you stay)

"Hildurs urterarium" holds one of Norway's largest Botanical collections and is also a good place to learn more about the old Norwegian culture. In the garden you will find a multitude of plants, a large herbal garden,  their cactus house as well as a copy of a stone age dwelling.  You can by lunch prepared on the wood fired baking stove located in the grill house in the garden. They produce their own wine and they have an art exhibition.

Cave paintings - in the Skaren-Monsen caves 6 km south of Brønnøysund. The paintings consist of 5 animal figures painted in red colouring (hematite) on the east wall at the end of the 120 metre long cave. The paintings are 4-5000 years old.

Interiør Langfjordhågstua. Foto: Torill Flegstad.Velfjord village museum «Minnetun» in Strøm is near road no. 76, 4 km west of Hommelstø. The site was opened in 1953 and consists of a large collection of buildings and objects from Velfjord, with a special collection of objects from the Southern Sami people. Open Monday to Friday: 13.00 -16.00,
Sunday: 15.00 -19.00.

Close to Kalbekkvika lies a deer farm. It is normally possible to enter the farm and hand feed the animals. Please ask in advance if you would like this.

Close to Hommelstø lies an old farm that makes traditional cheese. We recommend visiting them instead of buying cheese in the normal store. The quality  is high and the prices are acceptable. Epost: aanes_ysteri@yahoo.no

Skarsåsen Fortress 5 km south-east of Brønnøysund is a German coastal fortress from the Second World War. Trenches and tunnels lead underground from the four large cannon sites. There are also many local defence sites and the remains of 11 barracks, as well as a cannon and searchlight. Today Skarsåsen is a beautiful area combining overview and insight into local and world-wide history.
